More than 300 scientists from around the world have signed a consensus statement warning the Australian government that its proposed marine reserve in the Coral Sea has some serious shortcomings.

The reserve will take in a huge area of ocean stretching from Bundaberg in the South to the Torres Strait in the north, and reaching out to the edge of Australia's 200-mile exclusive economic zone.

Public comment on the proposal is due to close at the end of next week.

Professor Terry Hughes, Director of the Australian Research Council Centre for Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, at James Cook University, is one of the authors of the scientists' statement.

He says that increased protection would be of immense benefit to Australia and the world and that it could be done at negligible cost.
