Tom Wheatley joined the Pew Environment Group in August 2009 as manager of the Gulf Surface Longline Campaign.

Before coming to Pew, Wheatley was the regional representative for the Marine Fish Conservation Network in the Gulf of Mexico states, where he advocated for national policies to achieve healthy oceans and productive fisheries. Wheatley worked with a variety of partners, including environmentalists, recreational and commercial fishermen, and scientists to end overfishing, protect marine habitats and curb wasteful fishing practices.

Previously, Wheatley was the regional representative for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and the Alaska Coalition, where he worked to educate and activate citizens in the southeastern United States to protect public lands.

Wheatley was also a canvass director for the Citizens Campaign for the Environment in New York. He worked on successful campaigns to remove polychlorinated biphenyls (PCPs) from the Hudson River, ban a water-polluting gasoline additive and secure federal funding to clean up Long Island Sound.

Wheatley holds a bachelor’s of science degree in geography from Penn State University.
